Top 4: Why Singapore is Perfect for First-Time Asia Travelers
Our first trip to Asia was to Thailand. We immediately fell in love with the country and culture. However, following our most recent trip, we now believe that Singapore is the best destination for first-time Southeast Asia travelers. Here’s why:
- English is Widely Spoken. In fact, it is the de facto national language. While the country is a melting pot of cultures (see #4 below), virtually all citizens use English for business, governmental concerns, and within the education system. Posted signs are also in English.
In other Southeast Asian countries, those working directly in tourism often speak English. But when you get off the “typical tourist talk” script or encounter everyday people out in the streets, you realize the population isn’t as fluent as you might initially think.
- Singapore is Easily Walkable and Has a Modern Infrastructure. The central downtown district of Singapore is mostly flat and easily walkable. For neighborhoods farther away, the public transportation system is well-developed, efficient, and inexpensive.

For those who prefer ride-share services, Grab is the vendor of choice. Download the app and load your credit card before you leave home. You can even use the GrabPay feature to pay for certain goods and services!
- The Country is a Melting Pot of Cultures. While Thailand is very distinctly Thai, Singapore represents a melting pot of cultures, including Chinese, Malaysian, Indian, and more. It makes it easy for a first-time traveler to Asia to get an authentic sampling of several cultures without too much culture shock.

- Singapore Offers a Diverse Range of Activities. Be it culture, shopping, children’s activities, or hiking, there is something for everyone! Need more information on planning your perfect Singapore itinerary? Reach out to me via email, and I’ll be happy to assist.

And 2 Bonus Reasons!
- Singapore is Nearly Cashless. No need to worry about procuring Singapore dollars before you leave or rushing to an ATM immediately after landing. Nearly everything can be purchased via credit card or Apple/Google/Samsung Pay. The only exception might be a small vendor in one of the enticing hawker markets.

- Singapore is Very Clean. The level of cleanliness of Southeast Asian countries can vary among countries themselves and within a single country. Singapore, however, is one we found to be clean throughout. One less culture shock adjustment that first-time visitors to the region might appreciate.

Have you visited Southeast Asia? If so, where have you traveled, and do you think it’s a good location for a first-time traveler to Asia? If not, what’s holding you back? I’d love to hear from you in the comments below.

Hi Betsy. We never made it to Singapore, and though we are headed back to the states, to live, we will always travel, and Singapore definitely sounds like a lovely place to visit. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks Christina! We were very impressed, and I’d love to return one day. We hope to mimic your live-abroad experience (although likely on a shorter/smaller scale) when my husband retires. SE Asia is at the top of our list for an extended stint. Keep us posted on your return to the US and let me know where you settle.
