The Best Way to Clean Your Birkenstocks

While it’s inevitable, I don’t think anyone likes it when the footbeds of their Birkenstocks start getting all dark and nasty-looking. Luckily, this 5-step cleaning process will have your shoes looking almost as good as new!

5 Easy Steps to Better Birks

  1. Go over the footbed with fine-grit sandpaper until you see the nap of the suede start to rise and most of the dark staining disappear.

  1. Add 3-4 tablespoons of white vinegar and a drop of blue Dawn dishwashing liquid to 1/2 cup warm water.
  2. Using a soft brush like an unused toothbrush, apply the liquid to the footbed and any stains on the top part of the shoe. Be careful not to soak the shoe but be sure it is thoroughly coated with the liquid.
  1. Allow the shoe to air dry for several hours.
  2. Once completely dry, use a brass suede brush or another piece of fine-grained sandpaper to lightly go over the footbed.

Much improved!

Additional Tips

  • Do NOT use baking soda to clean your Birks! This is a popular online recommendation but will leave your shoes feeling gritty.
  • You can also use a suede brush or very fine-grained sandpaper to clean the uppers of suede Birkenstocks if you have a pair.
