The $5 π-Worthy Skincare Tool

I had lunch with a friend this summer and she mentioned that she had started shaving her face! π² WHAT!?! Who knew that was a thing? Well, my curiosity was piqued! I started to do a little research and learned that it has numerous benefits:
- removes peach fuzz for sleeker makeup application
- exfoliates the skin (sort of a poor man’s dermaplaning)
- promotes cellular turnover, resulting in a more youthful appearance
- allows for deeper product penetration, increasing effectiveness
It’s been reported that even Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor were skin-shaving devotees! Well, I decided to give it a try.
The Revlon Smooth & Perfect Face Defuzzer gets fantastic reviews and is only $5 so that is the product I decided to test. If you are clumsy like me, you may be a bit fearful of inadvertently slashing yourself! The tips below will ensure you get the best results.
- Liberally apply a moisturizer prior to shaving. The Ahava Hydration Creme mask is great for this. You can also use it during the winter months for overnight, deeper moisturizing.
- Use short, light, downward strokes for de-fuzzing.
- Wash your face with a gentle cleanser and apply a light moisturizer when finished.
While my peach fuzz is quite pale and fine in texture, I’ve noticed that I no longer see my tinted moisturizer and powder flecked up on my cheeks as I did prior to treatment. And my skin feels smoother as well. I’m a convert!
Other Winter Skincare Faves
I received this dry brush in a Fab, Fit, Fun box one time and was eager to try it. According to the Cleveland Clinic, dry brushing not only helps exfoliate dry winter skin but also increases blood circulation and promotes lymph node drainage. My biggest problem with dry brushing just seems to be remembering to do it!
CeraVe Moisturizing Creme is one of my year-round must-haves! This product is always a dermatologist top pick and gets fantastic consumer reviews as well. I’ve used it for years and consider it a top essential.
During the polar vortex of 2017, my cheeks were getting especially red and irritated due to the prolonged period of cold dry air and strong winds. My regular facial moisturizer just wasn’t cutting it. I came across Neosporin Eczema Essentials at the drug store and decided to give it a try. Initially, I was a bit alarmed by the salve-like formulation but it absorbed well and did not cause me to break out. After a few days, my cheeks returned to normal and I now keep this on hand for when I encounter an especially stubborn dry patch.
Lastly, winter is a great time to do a little extra foot care! I use Baby Foot to get my tootsies smooth and sleek then maintain with CeraVe SA Moisturizing Creme. It’s a slightly different formulation than the product listed above that uses salicylic acid as a light exfoliant which helps maintain soft skin.
