We recently spent a weekend in Granville Ohio, a town that I’ve wanted to visit ever since my college days! We were on our way to pick up our new pup and decided to treat ourselves to a stay at the Granville Inn – a last hurrah of sorts before our social life got restricted to temporary lock-down.

The Granville Inn
Located 30 minutes east of Columbus, the Granville Inn was built in 1924. It’s situated right in the downtown area of Granville, within easy walking distance to the shops/cafes and Denison University.

The rooms, while cozy, are well laid out and comfortable! I especially enjoyed the charming view from our window, overlooking one of the property’s patios. An amenity station with coffee, tea, snacks, etc. is located near the elevator on each floor.

Elegant, old-world details combined with modern amenities make the Granville Inn a popular choice for both wedding parties and parents visiting children at the adjacent Denison University.
Lobby Tavern Bar & Restaurant The Oak Room Restaurant Patio
The weather was perfect the weekend we were in town so we enjoyed dinner on the patio of the Oak Room Restaurant. Our waitress, Wendy, was super-friendly and attentive and suggested the steak Diane and scallops as a good surf & turf combo since we typically share entrees. Both dishes were fantastic and the dessert we chose, a cookie baked in a small cast iron skillet and topped with ice cream, was the best dessert I’ve eaten in a long time!
We stopped in the Tavern for a night cap and were thrilled to discover that the couple sitting next to us were the parents of Twitter sports personality McNeil (@reflog_18)! He was amazingly kind and supportive when I was in the Play CLE Twitter contest this spring and, after meeting his parents, I see where he gets his friendly demeanor. NOTE: Always sit at the bar and talk to the people next to you. I’ve met more interesting people that way!

Things to Do in Granville Ohio
Granville, Ohio is often cited as one of Ohio’s best home towns and it’s easy to see why! Packed with New England charm, a unique variety of shops and eateries and a variety of cultural activities, it’s certainly a place I’d have no trouble calling home. Take some time to walk the downtown area and find your own gems. A few specific places that we enjoyed are listed below:
- Kussmaul Gallery: Very nicely curated selection of unique gifts and home goods
- Green Velvet: Chic and independent women’s boutique
- Goumas Confections: A sugary wonderland to satisfy your sweet tooth
- Reader’s Garden Book Store: Cozy little shop with an interesting selection of new and used books
- Village Coffee Company: great spot for a quick coffee and breakfast snack
- Granville Farmer’s Market: Saturdays 8:30-Noon, May 4th – October 26, 2019
- Denison University: Founded in 1831, it is one of the oldest colleges in the old “Northwest Territory”. This visually stunning campus will make you want to go back to school again!

If cultural pursuits are more your thing, check out the Avery-Downer House & Hunter Robbins Museum, the Bryn Du Mansion, the Denison Museum or the Granville Historical Society For those that prefer outdoor activities, try Alligator Mound or nearby Buckeye Lake State Park.
No matter what you choose, there is more than enough to guarantee a full long weekend in the Granville area! For more fun things to do in Ohio, check out these posts! Until next time,

I am glad to hear that you had a great trip. I haven’t been to Granville but boy, oh boy, does this make me want to go! I wouldn’t mind a steak Diane and scallop right about now. 🙂 That’s so awesome too you were able to spend time with McNeil’s mom – so cool!
