4 Favorite Trends for Spring/Summer 2019

There are four trends for spring/summer 2019 that I’m feeling pretty good about and a few that I’ve identified as clear duds (at least for me). Come check them out and let me know your thoughts. Will you be picking up a trend piece or two this spring? Or will you be taking a hard pass on the season?

Part of what attracted to me to the following four trends is the fact that they seem (perhaps with the exception of tie-dye) like they’ll have a bit of longevity to them. The bucket hats, utility and animal prints should all segue nicely into fall. As usual with trends, don’t devote too much of your budget here unless it’s something you really love and can see wearing either a lot or for multiple seasons.

Bucket Hats: Bucket hats fortunately suit a wide variety of people. Their sporty style makes them best suited for casual outings. And would you look at that? I even found a couple that incorporate OTHER spring trends! Looking at you animal prints and tie-dye.

Animal Prints: Woo-hoo! You mean I can now wear my beloved leopards, etc. into summertime? Thank you, fashion Gods! Well, kinda.. to keep things seasonally appropriate I’ll likely switch out to lighter toned leopards or snakeskin patterns.

Utility Wear: This trend is taking place with regard to both color and style. Wearing tonal outfits of cream, beige, light brown or olive was big on the runway. With regard to style, look for pockets, belting details, epaulets and larger, more prominent buttons.

Tie-Dye: Would anyone believe me if I told you I used to the occasional Grateful Dead show? Hmmm…as I thought, but it’s true! Tie-dye is still on my groovy list although in my old age, I’ve come to prefer more tonal versions.

On the Fence

Clear Clothing/Plastic/Vinyl: When it comes to clothing, this trend holds little appeal. I can’t imagine how swampy it must get in some of these pieces in any temperature above 60. However, when it comes to shoes or handbags, I’m a bit more willing to give things a try.

Giant Earrings/Cuffs: So, I really like the over-sized earrings and cuffs on other people but they just seem to overwhelm me. Particularly earrings. It’s hard to find pairs that aren’t resting on my shoulders. Thanks 2018-2019 for helping me realize I apparently have a pin head!

Trends I’m Loving Less

80’s Inspired: There’s an old saying that says never to wear a trend the second (third, fourth, etc.) time it comes around. While I don’t 100% agree with this, when it comes to 80’s garb, exaggerated shoulders, neon and hugely over-sized silhouettes will remain squarely in my past.

Large Bows and Trimmings: This trend sort of runs hand-in-hand with 80’s trend. In most cases it comes off looking either caricature-like or childish. And lots of “big stuff” just overwhelms my frame or gives me linebacker shoulders. Pass.

Bike Shorts: Shown often this season with a blazer. It’s just not for me.

  1. I would say I love leopard whether it’s in season or not. It’s just one of those prints that can withstand time! I am so so on the utility item pieces though if it has pockets and it looks cute, definitely sign me up! Hehe The transparent bag is okay. Not sure about that one. I do love tie dye and I am all for it. I already two pieces in my closet that I absolutely love!

    1. Huge leopard fan as well! And I hear you on the clear stuff – if I get something, it will definitely be a cheaper, short-lived trend kind of item; nothing too crazy. Thanks for stopping by!
