Home Office Makeover: Before

My office is located on the first floor of the house and is a small but functional 10′ by 11′.  I purchased the furniture you see below, long before I got married or moved into this house, at a local company’s going out of business sale.  It was of the “assemble it yourself” variety (which I did!) and it gave us a lot of storage but was always a bit over-scaled for the space.  It also had seen a good bit of wear and tear over the years.

The Makeover Process

Replacing the flooring was the first step in the makeover.  While we were doing the office, we also decided to replace the floor in our living/dining area for continuity.  We found a Mirage floor in a maple Rio finish that complemented our existing tile, as the new floor would meet up against it in both the entryway and kitchen.

Tired of the cramped space under the old configuration, we wanted the office components to run the full length of the back wall, leaving the center of the room more open and airy.  For this, we turned to Alpine Cabinets of Holmes County, an Amish cabinet-maker that we we’ve used several times in the past.

Alpine Cabinets works with you on design and layout and everything is custom fit to maximize space.  The materials and craftsmanship are top notch.  Below is the plan we came up with.  It features:

  • 2 double files
  • a set of drawers for notes and small office supplies
  • a lower cabinet with shelves to hide the laptop, router, etc.
  • a pullout keyboard drawer
  • 2 upper storage cabinets for copy paper and other supplies
  • a floating display shelf
  • 3 cord holes in the counter top so we could hide all of our cords

The walls are a dusty aqua/teal blue, which I still like, so we left them alone but added some crown molding to the entire room for additional detail.  Once the cabinetry was installed, I was eager to start decorating!

Home Office Makeover: After

Before we even started the project, I knew that my Carolina sweet grass baskets would work well on the shelf above the monitor but the rest…

For years we’ve collected small prints from all the cities that we visit.  We have so many now that we don’t have enough wall space to show them! So I picked out five similar in size and color saturation for display on the cabinet wall.

We needed a little bit more seating so we added a sleek but comfortable leather bench along with a few pillows and a throw.  Great for when you need a quick little cat nap between calls!

I found the accent lamp and decorative geode at HomeGoods.  Similar items are linked below.  The small dish was a souvenir from Helsinki, Finland during a visit in 2016.

The room feels so sleek and uncluttered now!  I just love the way it turned out and hope you do as well.  Working is so much more pleasant when you’re in a space that you enjoy.
